The New Ladies Of Pop Music

Lately there seems to be an explosion of female singer in the pop world. Who haven’t heard about La Roux or Little Boots yet? Well, it seems they are not alone…

La Roux (born Elly Jackson), the most famous redhead of the moment, presents us a mixture of 80’s pop with futuristic ideals and looks. The hype started when “Quicksand” came out. The first single climbed quickly to the tops, was released through the label of the moment (Kitsuné) and featured three fabulous danceable remixes! “In For The Kill” came as a second single and the hype grew even bigger, the song played everywhere, Skream’s “Lets Get Ravey” remix was a dancefloor hit and a major label appeared. The third single “Bulletproof” just came to confirm what everyone was hoping – a remarkable debut album. And that is the truth, when everyone thought that 80’s revival was dead, the self titled album ‘La Roux’ came out and it will probably be one of the best things you’ll be able to hear this year.
Little Boots was huge even before she released anything. Acclaimed by BBC, her way to the top seemed easy. A few singles and EP’s proved she had some great electro-pop songs to call our attention. “Stuck On Repeat” and “Meddle” did the honours (as well as a bunch of remixes) and half a world thought the new Kylie Minogue was coming there. Early this summer, the debut album ‘Hands’ came out and was a disappointment. Despite the great songs it has, the whole album seems like a huge effort to appear pretty and glamorous, and again its impossible to avoid the Kylie Minogue comparison, but still there’s something that Little Boots miss to be at that level, and so, her music seems almost like an imitation and a lot of interest is lost.
But not only these two girls appeared making cool pop music lately. England also “bread” Ellie Goulding, Marina & The Diamonds, Pixie Lott and Florence & The Machine. Ellie is showing herself with two interesting songs called “Starry Eyed” and “Wish I Stayed” (the last one in collaboration with the also poppy Frankmusik). Marina & The Diamonds started to climb her ladder with the EP ‘The Crown Jewels’ that has “I Am Not A Robot” as main track and ‘Obsessions / Mowgli’s Road’ released as a double A Side single. Pixie Lott is probably more likely to reach mainstream than all the others, her music is electro-popish with catchy pastiche chorus (doesn’t she reminds Lady Gaga?!). Lott’s first single’s called “Mama Do” and the video is around… On the other hand, there’s Florence & The Machine and her AMAZING debut album ‘Lungs’ nominated for the Mercury Prize. She is more headed to rock than electro, and songs like “Dog Days Are Over” and “Rabbit Heart (Raise It Up)” are not easy to forget that soon…

Noiserv

Noiserv is the solo project of David Santos, a Portuguese young songwriter. Noiserv’s first release, a digital EP called ‘56010-92′ resembled Eliot Smith both in music and words. His first album came out last year entitled ‘One Hundred Miles From Thoughtlessness’ and it’s the perfect introduction to his music. Full of dark thoughts and sadness, the songs unveil an almost childish experimentalism (toys, metalophones, little toy organs, melodicas) under layers and layers of soothing music with appealing vocals, reminding a bit of Eliot Smith, and even Rufus Wainwright some times.
Even the album itself (its physical version) is presented in a special way, it features artwork by Diana Mascarenhas as a colour book, with a four coloured pencil attached to it so everyone can remind of when they were children (the hidden track might work great as an understanding to this).
It’s impossible not to feel a bond with the strength on Noiserv’s songs, such as “Consolation Prize”, “Tokyo Girl”, “Bullets On Parade” or “For The Ones Who Left Me”. David is a one man show, though it often appears he has a whole orchestra on his back. The album is closed with a song named after the instrument in which it is played, a “Bontempi” organ.
When playing live the experience is taken to a superior level, Noiserv presents himself with a paraphernalia of instruments and toys surrounding him on stage where he’s also accompanied by Diana Mascarenhas, a designer that paints and projects the story behind the songs David is singing… The drawings are hand made in real time, using a pen tablet connected to a computer. The visual effect is (just as Noiserv’s music) almost childish, almost too beautiful… it’s definitely worth the time to listen and watch…

Marina & The Diamonds

Marina & The Diamons just appeared and the hype seems to be spreading… some similarities to Kate Bush and a marvelous EP with three songs are enough to lauch Marina Diamandis to the top! The EP ‘The Crown Jewels’ just came out on Neon Gold records and it features the awsome “I Am Not A Robot” (some fantastic remixes are all over the web), the big pop “Seventeen” and “Simplify”. This release was preceded by a 7″ single that featured dramatic “Obsessions” as A-side and the powerpop “Mowgli’s Road” as B-Side. in fact, Marina & The Diamonds tend to work on both sides, the dramatic dark songs and the poppy enlightened ones, which seems to work out pretty fine… This lady might be next pop queen in the UK, so you better keep an eye on her.

What if Susanne Oberbeck / No Bra had a male version?! Well, the portuguese artist Miguel Bonneville managed to be that and even more with his project BlackBambi. The music is extremely similiar to what No Bra is doin, but BlackBambi creates a mental image that you can’t avoid and makes it so much more interesting… you’ll only understand by listening and watching the video for the single “Gisberta” which is below…

Jessica 6 (previously known as Deep Red) debuted earlier this year in New York and the hype started to spread. The band features the bassist Andrew Raposo, keyboardist Morgan Wiley, and the amazing vocals of Hercules & Love Affair’s singer Nomi Ruiz. Their first single “Fun Girl” was released May 27th and can be called a mixture of disco, electro and house in a dark and sexy way ready for any dancefloor!
Jessica 6 are touring Europe to promote the first single, and if you can catch them don’t miss the oportunity…

MIEL FRAGA, the Tokyo Grrrrrrrl

Miel Fragawas born in Japan not too long ago to come out into this world and amaze us with her singularity! She gained quite some recognition after collaborating with ex-Ladytron’s glam-rocker Pop Levi on the Japanese version of his song “Mai’s Space”. Miel hasn’t got an album yet and there are no plans for it at the moment but the few songs she exposed to the world are too great not to notice her: “Taste Of Miel” is aggressively experimental, “Anudephotograph” is folk-rap (yes, it’s possible), “Take The Magic Train” is electro-pop, “Night Door” a beautiful lullaby with wonderfully written lyrics and “Electric Heart” is a smashing pop hit included in the ‘Girl Powder’ compilation album. This is the only song you can actually buy, the others are now out of her player but anyone that got the chance to listen surely remembers them well… At the moment you can listen to another great song Miel did inspired by her collaboration with Candy Land on his song “White Noise” called “We Can’t Go Home Again”, where electro and experimentalism unite with an addictive vocal line… surrender to the power of these Japanese girl and say YAY TOKYO!!!

A Journey Through “Two Suns”

I found this little film called “Joshua & The Bat” which has previews for the songs of Bat For Lashes’ album “Two Suns”
On the official website there’s also this little information about the video:
“All the footage was shot in the beautiful Joshua Tree National Park in California and contains excerpts from all the songs from the new album, including the first single ‘Daniel’.”

Just The Architect

Jonathan Chan (or Just The Architect) lives in Birmingham, where he is an architecture student and a remarkable violinist. Listening to his music is a totally new experience, not possible to completely define: think the musical wisdom of Patrick Wolf, Owen Pallet and Andrew Bird, think the fantasy world in the lyricism of Lewis Carroll or Angela Carter, think of a quiet forest in the middle of agitated London town, think all this and something totally different, then maybe you’ll get inside Jonathan’s world. As he defines himself, Just The Architect jumps between genres from song to song, but they all stick together perfectly.
Last year, Just The Architect released three EP’s for free download on his MySpace page: “508” which includes the brilliants ‘Cathedral Spires’, ‘Cadet Force’ and ‘Countach!’; “Tiger vs. World” has its peak on ‘Off The Cliffs’ and ‘Avast!’ (one of my personal favorites) and “Tinseltown Tongues” the less interesting of the three, still quite good! His latest songs (unreleased at the moment) include epic moments reminding a bit of Celtic music (‘Honey & Cake’ and ‘Road To Applecross’) and experiences with 8-bit electronics on his best song so far, the furious ‘Theo The Weak’.
