Bat For Lashes – Two Suns
It seems like a decade has passed since miss Natasha Kan released her debut as Bat For Lashes “Fur & Gold”, but it’s only been two years actually. What have she done this whole time?! She toured the world, listened 80’s pop (everyone knows her live cover of ‘Sweet Dreams’, or should know at least) and grew up. This 2009, Natasha came out of her cave and presents us the shiny “Two Suns”, her second album, insufflated with light and dazzling stories of someone who have learnt and lived a lot lately.
‘Glass’ is a new and extra restless ‘What’s A Girl To Do?’ and it’s the perfect song to start the album, shows us something new but reminds us of the past as well. Starting to listen ‘Sleep Alone’ makes us realize this album cannot fail to please us because it sounds like “Fur & Gold”! Wrong! A bit after the first minute of this song, poppy electro comes in to help the chorus and everything changes from here on. All the other songs are really different from what we were used to and that’s as exciting as a new album must be. ‘Daniel’ is pop, is rock, is electronic… ‘Peace Of Mind’ is gospel, the lyrics in ‘Siren Song’ remind us of CocoRosie’s ‘By Your Side’. ‘Pearl’s Dream’ could have been performed by Blondie on their peak, ‘Two Planets’ seems to have been produced by Björk & PJ Harvey, ‘Travelling Woman’ has her monotonous (compliment) piano and ‘The Big Sleep’ is haunted by Scott Walker’s voice and closes the album as if it was all a strange good dream. Let’s go back to sleep and listen all again from the beginning…
Second albums are usually hard to make, and most of them hard to please… not every artist can write them or continue after them… Bat For Lashes did it, if there were doubts about her ability as an artist, “Two Suns” enlightens them all!
