Sweedish singer Robyn is releasing a new album, five years after her latest and extremely sucessful “Robyn”. Meanwhile she worked with Röyksopp, Yelle and some other artists. “Body Talk Pt. 1″ is the name of this new album, and Robyn mentioned she might be releasing Pt. 2 and Pt. 3 later this year.

“Body Talk Pt. 1″ has only 8 songs, but after you listen to it you feel like not more are needed. Opening track ‘Don’t Fucking Tell Me What To Do’ is dark electro, followed by four pop themes, the electrifying ‘Fembot’, ‘Dancing On My Own’, ‘Cry When You Get Older’ and ‘Dancehall Queen’. The next song is definitly the most interesting, a collaboration with Röyksopp that goes by the name of ‘None Of Dem’ where Robyn sings over addictive dance beats “none of them get my sex, none of them move my intelect… none of these drugs get me high… none of this beats ever break the law…” and complains about boys. ‘Hang With Me’ is the only non-exciting track in this release, but the soothing, almost lullaby-like ‘Jag Vet En Dejlig Rosa’ closes the album in perfection.

“Body Talk Pt. 1″ definitly confirms Robyn as a secure artist of pop music, if that was even needed anymore. Thumbs up!

“Damaris” is Patrick Wolf’s third single for his album “The Bachelor”. A song about love and sorrow, the video (directed by Patrick Wolf himself) featuring Gwendoline Christie in the part of Damaris, fits perfectly in this universe! Addictive strings build the song from the beginning to the end, accompanied by beautiful choir and Irish whistle. But the most interesting about this single are it’s B-Sides. “Peacock Skies” is an electronic experimental piece, already heard on the first episode of Patrick Wolf’s Journal (watch it HERE)

“Queen Isabella (The She-Wolf Of France)” is an amazing song that could fit perfectly in the album “The Bachelor”. Harpsichords, harsh beats, screams, strings, everything Patrick got us used to is here gathered on a beautiful instrumental for disturbing lyrics about betrayal and disloyalty ‘It was late last summer, I found out that you went to, one of those places, the men go to mate’ Mr. Wolf sings ‘What the fuck was I thinking, my heart’s still sinking, down to my stomach, down to my feet, she were my she-wolf’

To finalize, a beautiful acoustic mix of “Damaris” at St. George’s Church, reminding us how magnificent Patrick Wolf’s live performances are, whether acoustic or electrified to the maximum…

Jonathan Chan, the mind behind Just The Architect, is one of those people that always leave us mesmerizes by anything he touches!

Wandering through his own magical world, Just The Architect present us six new songs on the edge of perfection. Title track is violent and chaotic, a love tragedy, a fantasy, a dream – all this combining a pop sensibility to marvellous string arrangements and beautiful lyrics…

“Little Tin Soldiers” could be Just The Architect’s major approach to a gothic lullaby, “The Trade” reminds his first demos. A stunning duet with Rachel Kenedy on “Concoction” brings strings and backing vocals making way to a dazzling female voice. “Lost Along The Way” is pop music via Patrick Wolf and Owen Pallet.

The best moment of this EP is definitely “In Motion”… a dark, melancholic, repetitive melody swirls inside our minds like some kind of spell, it’s impossible not to stay put and listen closely to all that’s happening inside just one song. When it’s over you just wish it would never end…

I’ve written about Just The Architect before and he is definitely someone you will want to follow, he might never become world wide famous… but those who know him, are surely quite lucky!

Jeffree Star is one of those artists you would never imagine recording a good album. To be honest, I can’t really say if it’s true or not… Jeffree’s debut album ‘Beauty Killer’ isn’t perfect but it isn’t bad, I’d say it’s worth a listen!
Opening with the line “I’m gonna break your heart and get away with murder” we can see where we are being taken to, a world of love and hate, let’s call it emo. Jeffree Star tackles with extremely sugared pop and emo-rock all over the album ‘Beauty Killer’. Songs like “Get Away With Murder”, “Prisoner” or “Love Rhymes With Fuck You” could perfectly fit on a Panic at The Disco or Cobra Starship’s album… on the other hand there’s the simple pop based on electro music of songs like “Electric Sugar Pop”, “Lollipop Luxury” and “Get Physical”.
If we look at ‘Beauty Killer’ and to everything Jeffree Star, the self proclaimed Queen Of The Internet, ever done, it’s obvious that all makes sense. Whether we like it or not, Jeffree Star became indeed a star in the last few years and by his own merit! Jeffree’s world is all about fame, eyelash curlers, fashion, liposuction, lollipops and other candies… millions call him futile, millions love him. I’m only sure of one thing, we can’t judge a book by its cover, and ‘Beauty Killer’ is not my favorite album of the last months but I’ve been listening some songs all week and it does feel nice to catch a chorus and sing it everywhere.

La Roux (born Elly Jackson), the most famous redhead of the moment, presents us a mixture of 80’s pop with futuristic ideals and looks. The hype started when “Quicksand” came out. The first single climbed quickly to the tops, was released through the label of the moment (Kitsuné) and featured three fabulous danceable remixes! “In For The Kill” came as a second single and the hype grew even bigger, the song played everywhere, Skream’s “Lets Get Ravey” remix was a dancefloor hit and a major label appeared. The third single “Bulletproof” just came to confirm what everyone was hoping – a remarkable debut album. And that is the truth, when everyone thought that 80’s revival was dead, the self titled album ‘La Roux’ came out and it will probably be one of the best things you’ll be able to hear this year.
Little Boots was huge even before she released anything. Acclaimed by BBC, her way to the top seemed easy. A few singles and EP’s proved she had some great electro-pop songs to call our attention. “Stuck On Repeat” and “Meddle” did the honours (as well as a bunch of remixes) and half a world thought the new Kylie Minogue was coming there. Early this summer, the debut album ‘Hands’ came out and was a disappointment. Despite the great songs it has, the whole album seems like a huge effort to appear pretty and glamorous, and again its impossible to avoid the Kylie Minogue comparison, but still there’s something that Little Boots miss to be at that level, and so, her music seems almost like an imitation and a lot of interest is lost.
But not only these two girls appeared making cool pop music lately. England also “bread” Ellie Goulding, Marina & The Diamonds, Pixie Lott and Florence & The Machine. Ellie is showing herself with two interesting songs called “Starry Eyed” and “Wish I Stayed” (the last one in collaboration with the also poppy Frankmusik). Marina & The Diamonds started to climb her ladder with the EP ‘The Crown Jewels’ that has “I Am Not A Robot” as main track and ‘Obsessions / Mowgli’s Road’ released as a double A Side single. Pixie Lott is probably more likely to reach mainstream than all the others, her music is electro-popish with catchy pastiche chorus (doesn’t she reminds Lady Gaga?!). Lott’s first single’s called “Mama Do” and the video is around… On the other hand, there’s Florence & The Machine and her AMAZING debut album ‘Lungs’ nominated for the Mercury Prize. She is more headed to rock than electro, and songs like “Dog Days Are Over” and “Rabbit Heart (Raise It Up)” are not easy to forget that soon…

Noiserv is the solo project of David Santos, a Portuguese young songwriter. Noiserv’s first release, a digital EP called ‘56010-92′ resembled Eliot Smith both in music and words. His first album came out last year entitled ‘One Hundred Miles From Thoughtlessness’ and it’s the perfect introduction to his music. Full of dark thoughts and sadness, the songs unveil an almost childish experimentalism (toys, metalophones, little toy organs, melodicas) under layers and layers of soothing music with appealing vocals, reminding a bit of Eliot Smith, and even Rufus Wainwright some times.
Even the album itself (its physical version) is presented in a special way, it features artwork by Diana Mascarenhas as a colour book, with a four coloured pencil attached to it so everyone can remind of when they were children (the hidden track might work great as an understanding to this).
It’s impossible not to feel a bond with the strength on Noiserv’s songs, such as “Consolation Prize”, “Tokyo Girl”, “Bullets On Parade” or “For The Ones Who Left Me”. David is a one man show, though it often appears he has a whole orchestra on his back. The album is closed with a song named after the instrument in which it is played, a “Bontempi” organ.
When playing live the experience is taken to a superior level, Noiserv presents himself with a paraphernalia of instruments and toys surrounding him on stage where he’s also accompanied by Diana Mascarenhas, a designer that paints and projects the story behind the songs David is singing… The drawings are hand made in real time, using a pen tablet connected to a computer. The visual effect is (just as Noiserv’s music) almost childish, almost too beautiful… it’s definitely worth the time to listen and watch…

Below there are photos from the concert at Café Concerto in Torres Novas… the photos were gently offered by Hugo Narciso…

The EP ‘The Crown Jewels’ just came out on Neon Gold records and it features the awsome “I Am Not A Robot” (some fantastic remixes are all over the web), the big pop “Seventeen” and “Simplify”. This release was preceded by a 7″ single that featured dramatic “Obsessions” as A-side and the powerpop “Mowgli’s Road” as B-Side. in fact, Marina & The Diamonds tend to work on both sides, the dramatic dark songs and the poppy enlightened ones, which seems to work out pretty fine… This lady might be next pop queen in the UK, so you better keep an eye on her.
